Chamber orchestra concert set Saturday
The Chamber Orchestra Of Kona is hosting a free “Hana Hou” concert from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Saturday at the Makaeo Events Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park.
The orchestra, a nonprofit organization, is comprised of volunteer string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians from all over the Big Island. Maestro Michaeloha Elam leads the orchestra.
Bank of Hawaii offers community award
Bank of Hawaii is accepting applications from Hawaii County nonprofit organizations for the 2013 Monty Richards Hawaii Island Community Award through July 5. The award provides one or more grants totaling up to $25,000. Nominations may be made by the public or 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations.
The award was established in 2008 in honor of Herbert “Monty” Montague Richards Jr., a Hawaii Island community leader and longtime board director for Bank of Hawaii.
Award selection is based on exemplary fulfillment of the organization’s mission; leadership demonstrated by the organization’s executive director and board; and the organization’s engagement in community development, education or human services. Additional consideration is given to organizations that also focus on community development through financial education programs.

Hikers to scale Puuwaawaa
The Kona Hiking Club will hike the Puuwaawaa cinder cone Saturday. From the summit, visitors may view a panorama of the ocean and five mountains. Informational markers are placed at points of interest along the moderately challenging trail. A Department of Land and Natural Resources representative will speak to the group about native outplantings.
This hike is limited to 25 participants; hikers must make reservations with Kathleen at 557-9246.
The total hike is five miles with a steep incline and decline. The trail climbs 1,100 feet to the summit at 3,967 feet. A guided educational loop tour trail will be offered at the top of the puu. A four-wheel drive option will be available for hikers having trouble on the final incline or to those with knee challenges hiking back down.
Be prepared for rain as well as sun, carry at least 2 liters of water per person, wear closed-toe shoes and sun protection, and bring a snack or lunch. Hiking sticks are recommended.
Carpoolers will leave at 7:45 a.m. from the Lanihau Center, near Buns in the Sun. Call Alice at 322-6481 or 938-1491 for carpooling information. Others may meet at 8:30 a.m. at the trailhead between the 21 and 22 mile markers on Mamalahoa Highway. After passing the main gate, take the road to the left and park near the hiker check station.
Macdonald teaching beginner knitting class
Stephanie Macdonald will lead a knitting class for beginners from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and May 25 at Island Yarn and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St. Students will learn basic knitting skills and create their own summer scarf. No knitting skills are needed to take this class.
This is a two-session class; the cost is $25 per session, plus materials.

Rumba lesson, dance party slated Sunday
The Kona Ballroom Dance Club is holding a dance party from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Kona Elks Club. The program begins with a rumba lesson taught by Lance Oliver from The Dancing Tree. Wear appropriate dancing shoes. No partner is needed to attend. A $5 donation is requested. Pupu are welcome. For more information, call Franz at 326-9190.
Radio enthusiasts meeting Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
All members and anyone interested in amateur radio are invited. A potluck picnic will take place during the meeting; attendees are encouraged to bring a Thai food item to share.
